## Check species as well as strength grade

Queensland adds a species rule to the timber framing routes in NCC 2022. For structural timber, the species must suit the scheduled use. A grade stamp alone does not answer that question. Check the species, intended use and design together.

## What the Queensland clause says

[QLD H1D6(4)(g)](https://www.abcb.gov.au/editions/ncc-2022/adopted/volume-two/7-queensland/h1-structure) names Schedules A, B or C in Book 2. It names the December 2017 books. That check sits alongside the listed timber design routes.

This guide explains that NCC 2022 reference. Ask your certifier which code and state rules apply to your job. Do not assume that every edition uses the same book date.

## Find the books and check the date

[Business Queensland](https://www.business.qld.gov.au/industries/building-property-development/building-construction/laws-codes-standards/using-timber/construction-compliance) explains the two books:

| Resource | What to use it for |
|------------------|---------------------------------------------------------------|
| Book 1 | Definitions, timber properties, uses and decay hazard context |
| Book 2 | Properties, use schedules and conditions |
| Amendment record | Changes to read with the relevant book |

The [official book collection](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/construction-timbers-in-queensland) lists January 2020 book files and a list of changes. The cited clause names December 2017. These dates differ. Keep both dates visible. Ask your certifier which text to use. Check this before you rely on a changed entry.

Business Queensland also describes QTimber, a tool for looking up timber uses and properties. Use the search to find the right entry. Keep the book and schedule reference with the plans.

## Check the complete order line

Note the species, grade, treatment, use and member mark. Ask the supplier for the data to check each field. Find the species in the right schedule. Read its notes and limits too.

For example, an order lists only a trade name and grade. Ask the supplier to name the species or group. Ask for proof that it suits the planned use. A broad trade name may cover more than one species.

## Keep species checks separate from sizing

A suitable species does not choose the member size or its joints. The framing design still sets the grade, section, supports and fixing details. Read the [AS 1684 guide](https://www.chippy.tools/building-codes/au/framing/as-1684-span-tables-explained/) for those inputs and the [MGP guide](https://www.chippy.tools/building-codes/au/framing/mgp10-vs-mgp12/) for grade marks.

Keep the schedule reference and supplier response with the order. Get any swap checked before the timber goes into the frame. The [Chippy Tools code-check sheet](https://www.chippy.tools/building-codes/printables/#code-check) has space for the clause, book date and questions to resolve.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does Queensland H1D6 add for structural timber?

The cited NCC 2022 QLD H1D6(4)(g) requires a species scheduled for the appropriate use in Schedules A, B or C of Book 2. It names the December 2017 Construction Timbers in Queensland publication.

### Where can I find Construction Timbers in Queensland?

Use the Queensland Government publication collection linked in this guide. It lists both books and amendments. Check the book date against the version named in the code that applies to your job.

### Can I use the January 2020 files without checking the code reference?

The collection’s file label differs from the December 2017 reference in the cited NCC 2022 clause. Ask the certifier to resolve the applicable version and amendments before relying on a changed entry.

### Does an MGP grade prove the species is suitable for every Queensland use?

No. Strength grade, species, treatment and intended use are separate checks. Match the relevant schedule conditions and the framing design.
