The requirement
Before you pull a gradient number off the internet, sort out one thing: which rule even applies to your job. Most people quote the wrong one.
The famous NCC ramp clause is Volume One D4D12 (it points you to the standard AS 1428.1 for the detail). But D4D12 is for Class 2–9 buildings — units, shops, offices, that sort of thing. It does not cover a normal Class 1a house.
A house’s step-free way in — the path from the street or driveway to the front door with no step — is set by a different rule book called Livable Housing Design (Volume Two, H8). How much of Livable Housing you actually have to follow depends on your state or territory, because they don’t all adopt it the same way. So check your local rules first.
Here’s the split in plain terms:

The house access path (Class 1a)
For the step-free path into a house, the slope can be 1:14 at the steepest, measured the way you walk. Sideways slope (crossfall) can be no steeper than 1:40.
You also get one optional step ramp — a short, slightly steeper ramp at a single step — at up to 1:10. Its rise can be up to 190 mm, its length up to 1900 mm, and its width at least 1000 mm.
Walkway or ramp?
The slope decides what you’re building:
- 1:20 or flatter is a walkway (just a path). No ramp landing or handrail rules apply.
- Steeper than 1:20, up to 1:14 is a ramp.
How far you can run before you need a break depends on the slope. You can run up to 9 m of ramp at 1:14, or up to 15 m at 1:20. For a slope in between, you sit somewhere in between too.
Landings
The flat bit at each end of the ramp is the landing. On a house access path each landing must be:
- at least 1200 mm long,
- at least as wide as the ramp, and
- level — or up to 1:40 if you need a small fall to shed water.
For units, shops and offices (Class 2–9)
If your job is a Class 2–9 building, the ramp gradient and the detailed landing sizes and spacing come from AS 1428.1, not from a number you pick. Follow AS 1428.1 for those.
D4D12 does set two of its own hard limits for these buildings, and they’re worth knowing:
- A run of connected ramps must not climb more than 3.6 m total.
- One step-ramp landing must not overlap another.
Work it out by hand
You’re building the step-free path into a house. The front door sits 500 mm above the finished ground. How long does the ramp need to be at 1:14?
- Pick the slope. A house access path can be 1:14 at the steepest. 1:14 means for every 1 unit up, you travel 14 along.
- Do the sum. 500 mm up × 14 = 7000 mm, so 7 m of ramp run. (This 7 m is just the maths of the example, not a code figure.)
- Check the run limit. You can run up to 9 m at 1:14, and 7 m is under that, so a single run works — no mid-ramp landing needed for length.
- Add the landings. A level landing at least 1200 mm long goes at the top and the bottom.
So: about 7 m of ramp at 1:14, with a 1200 mm landing at each end. The slope calculator does this rise-over-run sum for you.
