Prince Edward Island Building Code: Stairs & Guards

Prince Edward Island’s Building Codes Act applies province-wide, but the specific code edition is set by regulation rather than named in the Act itself — and we haven’t been able to confirm which edition is currently in force. Most Atlantic provinces are on NBC 2020, and PEI likely follows that pattern, but confirm the current edition with PEI’s Office of the Fire Marshal / building officials before you rely on anything here.

Subject to that confirmation, a house stair would be expected to follow the NBC 2020 baseline — 200 mm max riser, 255 mm min run, 1950 mm headroom, 860 mm min width, 865–1070 mm handrails, 900 mm guards (1070 mm otherwise), the 600 mm trigger and the 100 mm gap.
