Building Code Requirements in Hessen
Hessen's HBO sets a 2.40 m minimum room height, with a reduced figure for cellars/attics and a transitional allowance for existing-building conversions — confirmed in §50.
Hessen’s building law is the Hessische Bauordnung (HBO), currently in force.
Minimum room height (lichte Raumhöhe): 2.40 m, set in §50 HBO. In a cellar or roof-space room (Keller-/Dachgeschoss), the figure reduces to 2.20 m. HBO also allows a 2.10 m transitional figure specifically when converting an existing building — lower than the standard new-build minimum, and only available in that conversion scenario.
Your LBO also sets boundary setbacks (Abstandsflächen), guard/parapet (Umwehrung) heights, and permit-free (verfahrensfrei) thresholds for garages and carports — none of these were independently confirmed for Hessen, so confirm them directly in the HBO text on rv.hessenrecht.hessen.de before you build to a number.
