German Wet-Room Waterproofing: DIN 18534, the Quasi-Mandatory Standard

Germany has no room-by-room Landesbauordnung waterproofing clause — the standard that governs wet-room membranes is DIN 18534, a paid DIN publication that the Bauregelliste elevates to near-mandatory status.

The requirement

Here’s the honest answer: no Landesbauordnung sets a wet-room waterproofing figure. Room height, natural light and ventilation each get a mention in the 16 Länder’s own building laws (see the room-height page below), but shower and wet-room membrane detail isn’t one of the things a Landesbauordnung itemises at all. For that, Germany points — quite firmly — to a single technical standard: DIN 18534, “Abdichtung von Innenräumen” (waterproofing of interior spaces).

DIN 18534 is unusual among the standards on this hub. In the UK, Ireland and Spain, the statutory instrument is simply silent and a private standard fills the gap unofficially. In Germany, DIN 18534 is listed in the Bauregelliste — the official catalogue of technical rules that state building authorities (the Länder) recognise as satisfying the building code. That listing gives it real, if indirect, legal weight: building on a wet room without following it is a genuine compliance risk, not just a departure from good practice. It’s the closest thing on this hub to AU’s AS 3740, except more binding — AS 3740 is explicitly optional under the NCC; DIN 18534’s Bauregelliste status makes it closer to quasi-mandatory.

Where the actual numbers live

DIN 18534 is a paid standard, published by DIN and sold through Beuth Verlag — not freely reproducible full text, the same constraint as BS 5385-1 in the UK or NF DTU 52.2 in France. The standard’s real technical content — which water-exposure class applies to which room and floor build-up, the membrane systems that satisfy each class, upstand and junction detailing — is what you’re paying for, and this page doesn’t reproduce it.

One concept worth knowing, without treating it as a figure to build to: DIN 18534 classifies wet areas partly around a “Bemessungswasserstand” — literally a design/planning water level, an assumed depth of standing water the waterproofing has to withstand rather than one flat wall height the way the NCC’s 1800 mm shower-wall figure works. Secondary technical literature commonly cites a planning water level in the region of 10 cm for an ordinary domestic wet room, but that’s a rough, general figure from summaries of the standard — not something we’ve verified against the current DIN 18534-1 text itself. Treat it as background on how the standard’s logic works, not a number to design or inspect against; the standard’s actual class definitions and figures are what you follow.

What this means on site

With the binding detail in a paid, Bauregelliste-listed standard:

  1. Get the current DIN 18534 parts relevant to your job (via Beuth Verlag or your trade body) before detailing wet-room waterproofing — don’t work from a secondhand summary or a figure quoted online.
  2. Establish the correct water-exposure class for the room and substrate you’re building, per DIN 18534-1’s classification system, before choosing a membrane system from Parts 2–6.
  3. Follow the membrane manufacturer’s system exactly — application, primer, upstand heights, junction and drain detailing — as specified for the DIN 18534 class that applies to your job.
  4. Keep the paperwork — the DIN 18534 class and part you worked to, the product’s technical data sheet, and evidence of correct installation — as your compliance record, since Bauregelliste-listed standards are what Land building authorities check against.
