# French Wet-Room Waterproofing: SPEC, SEL and Product Scope

Choose a wet-room system for its declared use. SPEC water protection, SEL waterproofing and the chosen technical assessment are not interchangeable.

## Choose the right system

French wet-room work needs a detail matched to the substrate, use and water load. **SPEC** means protection against water beneath tile. Do not treat that label alone as proof of a watertight floor system.

CSTB lists SPEC products separately from **SEL**, liquid roof and floor seal systems. Its product page points to **Cahier 3756** for resin SPEC work. The old blanket reference to Cahier 3714 on this page was not a sound basis for choosing a system.

## What to check before tiling

NF DTU 52.2 concerns bonded floor and wall coverings. The full standard and the chosen system’s technical assessment must settle which bases are allowed, wet-room use and fitting details. This review did not have the licensed DTU text.

For a floor with a drain, ask for proof that the proposed system covers that use. Check the drain joint, wall junctions, door threshold and pipe seals. Confirm primer, thickness, drying time and the test method. Keep the technical assessment and job records before tile hides the work.

Do not infer that every shower needs the same product or that a trade standard is automatically a statutory rule for every French project.
