Does Indonesia Have a Minimum Ceiling Height?

Check the rules for your room

This guide has not confirmed all current national room-size rules. That does not mean that no national minimum exists. Do not use the absence of a number here as approval for a low ceiling or a small room.

Ask the designer to check room height, floor area, daylight and fresh air. Each needs its own check. A ceiling height alone does not prove that a room is fit to live in. Stair headroom is a separate check too.

What to check before setting out

  • The current national building framework and the rules it brings in.
  • Local rules for the site and the proposed use of each room.
  • The SNI standards named in the design, with their editions.
  • The clear height after floors, ceilings, ducts and services are fitted.
  • Any sloped ceiling, beam or other low part that affects the room.

Get the required sizes on the plan. Ask the local Dinas PUPR or the permit team to resolve any conflict before you build. A common site practice is not proof of a legal minimum.
