# India Wet-Area Waterproofing: Check the Project Specification

Check the local rules, project specification and chosen system for bathroom waterproofing. IS 3067 is a general reference, not a complete shower detail.

## Start with the project rules

A bathroom needs a clear waterproofing plan. Do not take the lack of a single figure on this page as proof that no code rule applies. Check the local bye-laws, the project specification and the chosen system together.

**IS 3067:1988** is a general code of practice for damp-proofing and waterproofing. It is not enough, by itself, to choose a shower’s floor, wall and drain details. This review did not obtain the full current text or verify every NBC cross-reference. No fixed membrane height or thickness is approved here.

BIS now lists **SP 7:2026** in place of SP 7:2016. That change does not settle the rules for every site. A local rule may name a fixed edition or refer to documents as amended. Delhi UBBL 1.3.4 uses the latter approach. Do not assume it is frozen at NBC 2016.

## Set out the whole wet area

Ask the designer to identify the required system before work starts. The plan should deal with the floor, walls, drain, pipe entries and door. A screed or tile finish alone does not prove that water cannot reach the structure below. The full build-up and its joints matter.

Use the project or PWD specification where it applies. PWD means Public Works Department. A PWD method is not automatically the rule for every private home. Confirm the contract and local requirements first.

Then obtain the current instructions for the actual product. Check:

- Which base it can be used on, and how that base must be prepared.
- Which primer, layer thickness and curing time the system needs.
- How corners, joints, pipes and the drain must be sealed.
- Where the waterproof layer ends at walls and doors.
- Which tests and inspections must happen before it is covered.

Keep the membrane, drain and other parts within the specified system. Do not mix details from unrelated products. If the plan and product instructions conflict, resolve the detail with the designer before work.

The full standard, current local adoption and the project system still need review by a qualified local designer. This page is a checking guide, not a completed waterproofing design.
