Choose the system first
A wet-room plan needs more than a single wall height. Check the floor, walls, joints, drain and pipe entries as one system. The code, project spec and product guide each have a role. This page does not prove that the law has no duties to keep water out.
JASS 8 is the Architectural Institute of Japan’s standard for work to keep water out. The National Diet Library lists an 8th edition, issued in February 2022. Do not treat the 2014 edition as current. The full clauses were not available for this review, so no membrane height or coverage rate is claimed here. Confirm the edition and method that the project spec requires.
JIS A 6008 concerns sheet materials. A sheet standard alone does not choose a whole bathroom system. Check the exact product and its approved use with the designer and supplier.
Unit bath or site-built room
A unit bath uses a factory-made pan and wall system. It still needs the site work in its fitting guide. Joints, seals, drain links, pipe entries and the connection to the room must be complete. Do not assume a factory-built pod means no sealing or water checks on site.
A site-built room needs its own specified waterproof layer and details. Do not borrow a pod’s method for a tiled wet room, or mix parts from systems without the designer’s and maker’s agreement.
Before work starts:
- Confirm the room type and the exact system in the plans.
- Obtain its current fitting guide and project details.
- Check the base, corners, joints and each pipe or drain entry.
- Confirm required checks before covering the waterproof layer.
- Keep records of the products, details and completed work.
