The requirement
BFS 2024:6 sets no fixed foundation depth, no width, no concrete grade and no rebar cover. Chapter 7 (Geokonstruktioner) sends all of that to Eurocode design. Your numbers come from a ground check on your own site, not from a table in the code.
The rule book here is BFS 2024:6, from Boverket. Its full name is Boverkets föreskrifter och allmänna råd om bärförmåga, stadga och beständighet. It replaced the old rules, EKS, on 1 July 2025. On footings, it names the process, not the numbers.
No frost rule, no fixed depth. Kap 7 asks for three things on every geoconstruction. First, a geotechnical investigation of the site. Second, a risk class, the geoteknisk kategori (GK1/GK2/GK3). Third, a design done to Eurocode 7 (EN 1997, “Geoteknisk dimensionering”) with the Swedish National Annexes. No metre figure is printed in the rule itself.
Frost depth (tjäldjup) is the same story. It shifts by region and by site across Sweden. Some regional guide figures do exist. SGI, a separate ground agency, puts those out, not Boverket. So they are not building-code numbers, and this page will not print them as one.

Width: no table either. Boverket has no width table by soil type and load. Strip footing width is a design result under Eurocode 7. It weighs your soil’s bearing capacity against the building’s real loads. It is worked out for each job.
Concrete and cover. The concrete grade goes to Eurocode 2 (EN 1992) and SS-EN 206. Those set the strength class from the exposure condition and the design, not from a class named in BFS 2024:6. Rebar cover runs the same route, through the exposure-class cover tables in EN 1992-1-1. None of this is new for 2025. The old EKS did it the same way.
Work it out on site
The code gives you no depth or width to plug in here. Those two figures come off your ground report and your Eurocode 7 design, not off this page. Once you have both, the concrete volume is plain maths. The calculator does that part. Say your foundation is designed at:
- Total length of trench: 26 m
- Foundation width: 0.50 m (example only; read yours off your project’s Eurocode 7 geotechnical design)
- Foundation depth: 1.0 m (example only; set by your site’s ground and its frost protection design)
Volume = length × width × depth:
26 × 0.50 × 1.0 = 13.0 m³
So you’d order about 13.0 cubic metres. Then add a bit for spillage and an uneven trench. Most builders tack on 5 to 10 per cent. Swap in your own depth and width once your design is settled. The calculator does the sum.

Read this first. These figures reflect BFS 2024:6, in force since 1 July 2025 and replacing the old EKS. Foundation design in Sweden runs through Eurocode 7 (EN 1997) for ground/depth/width and Eurocode 2 (EN 1992) for concrete and cover, with Swedish National Annexes applying — this is Boverket’s own deliberate deferral, not a gap in research, and no single depth or width figure should be presented as a national minimum. Get your ground checked by a proper site investigation before you dig.
