Sweden's Wet-Room Rules: A Performance Clause, Not a Membrane Spec

The requirement

Since 1 July 2025, Sweden’s wet-room rule sits in a new Boverket regulation, not in BBR 6:5. The rule sets an outcome only. It fixes no membrane height and no floor fall. The real wet-room figures come from three trade rule books: GVK, BBV and Säker Vatten.

BBR 6:5 “Fuktsäkerhet” no longer applies. For years, most sources pointed to chapter 6:5 of BBR, short for Boverkets byggregler. That was the moisture-safety (fuktsäkerhet) chapter. On 1 July 2025, Boverket replaced BBR (BFS 2011:6) with nine new regulations. Each one covers one subject and carries its own number. Moisture safety now lives in its own successor regulation. It sits under the subject area of hygiene, health and environment.

Does Sweden Have a Minimum Ceiling Height? Not Since 2025

The requirement

No. Since 1 July 2025, Sweden sets no minimum ceiling height for rooms in a home. There is no figure you must hit. The old BBR fixed 2.40 m, but that rule is gone. The current code only asks that the height be “sufficient” for health and for the room’s use.

No fixed ceiling height. The rule sits in BFS 2024:8 (Hygien, hälsa och miljö samt hushållning med vatten och avfall), Kap 5 §1. It says room height must be “sufficient”. It must not harm people’s health. It must suit what the room is used for. You weigh the floor area, the number of people, how long they stay, what they do, and how sensitive they are. No mm or m figure appears anywhere in the text.

The requirement

BFS 2024:6 sets no fixed foundation depth, no width, no concrete grade and no rebar cover. Chapter 7 (Geokonstruktioner) sends all of that to Eurocode design. Your numbers come from a ground check on your own site, not from a table in the code.

The rule book here is BFS 2024:6, from Boverket. Its full name is Boverkets föreskrifter och allmänna råd om bärförmåga, stadga och beständighet. It replaced the old rules, EKS, on 1 July 2025. On footings, it names the process, not the numbers.

Swedish Ramp Gradients: 1:12 for an Accessible Ramp, No Fixed Number Otherwise

The requirement

An accessible ramp to a dwelling entrance can be no steeper than 1:12 (BFS 2024:12, Kap 2 §4). Any other ramp has no fixed gradient at all. For those, only the safety wording of BFS 2024:9 applies. The 1:12 figure survived the 1 July 2025 rewrite unchanged.

Sweden splits its ramp rules across two rule books. Which one you follow depends on what the ramp is for.

BFS 2024:12 covers the accessible ramp. This is the normal case: a ramp that makes a dwelling’s entrance accessible. Kap 2 §4 caps the gradient at 1:12. The old BBR fixed the same limit, and the 2025 reform carried it forward. Few figures got that treatment. One- and two-family houses get an easier path (Kap 2 §1). It is enough that an accessible route can be arranged on the plot later. The ramp does not have to be built on day one.

Swedish Stair Rules: No Fixed Rise or Going, One Fixed Headroom Figure

The requirement

Since 1 July 2025, Sweden fixes no rise, going, pitch, handrail height or general guard height for a stair. One number is fixed: headroom of at least 2.00 m. Everything else is a safety judgement under BFS 2024:9. The old 180 mm maximum riser is gone.

The rule is BFS 2024:9, Säkerhet vid användning av byggnader (Safety in use of buildings). It took over from that chapter of the old BBR. Kap 2 §5 says only that a stair (and a ramp) must be designed so people can move safely. Boverket’s own guidance spells it out: no measurements are given. You weigh up the risk on each job instead. There is no “2R+G” comfort formula either. None appears anywhere in the current text.
