Minimum Roof Pitch in England: Choose the Roof System

The requirement

Approved Document C for England requires a roof to resist rain. It does not provide one minimum pitch for every roof product. Section 6.3–6.9 covers roof weather resistance and routes using relevant standards.

Its scope includes sheet roofing as well as tile and slate. BS 5534 is not a universal sheet-roof standard. Choose the standard for the actual roof system, then check the maker’s pitch and exposure limits.

Before you lay the roof

Record the exact product, pitch, roof length and exposure. Check the laps, underlay, fixings, joints and drainage as one system. The lowest pitch on a product leaflet may depend on conditions that your roof does not meet.

For tile or slate, obtain the right current standard and fixing guide. For metal sheets or a membrane, use that system’s design documents. Do not transfer a tile rule to a sheet roof.

Keep the supplier’s specification with the drawings and record the work. The product guide helps prove the design; they do not replace the Building Regulations.
