Georgia State Minimum Standard Code: Stairs & Guards

Georgia builds to the Georgia State Minimum Standard One- and Two-Family Dwelling Code, based on the 2024 IRC with Georgia amendments, mandatory statewide since 1 January 2026.

The code is only months old at time of writing, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs hadn’t yet published detailed amendment commentary we could confirm against — so no specific Georgia stair or guard amendment is stated here. For a house stair, the figures follow the IRC baseline — 7¾ in max riser, 10 in min tread, 6 ft 8 in headroom, 36 in min width, 34–38 in handrails, 36 in guards, the 30 in guard trigger and the 4 in sphere — confirm any amendments your local jurisdiction has made.
