Ohio runs its own Residential Code of Ohio, based on the 2018 IRC — but enforcement for 1-3 family homes is a local option, not a state mandate. Confirm before relying on it.
Ohio builds to its own-named Residential Code of Ohio (RCO) — the 2019 RCO, based on the 2018 IRC, effective 1 July 2019 and last amended 1 March 2024. Unusually, enforcement for one-, two- and three-family dwellings is a local option, not a state mandate — some jurisdictions actively enforce the RCO, others don’t inspect at all. Confirm with your local building department whether the RCO is enforced where you’re building.
