Shower & Tub Wall Finish (IRC R307.2)

The IRC's 72-inch rule for nonabsorbent shower and tub walls, the backer board that has to sit behind the tile, and why the code stops short of a full waterproofing spec.

The requirement

The key number is 72 inches (1829 mm). Bathtub and shower floors need a nonabsorbent finish. So do shower walls, and tub walls where there is an installed showerhead. The finish must reach 72 in (1829 mm) above the floor. That is IRC 2021, Section R307.2 “Bathtub and shower spaces”.

Nonabsorbent means the surface will not soak up water. Tile, solid surface, or a fiberglass or acrylic tub-shower unit all count. Bare drywall does not. R307.2 states the height above the floor. Do not substitute a drain-inlet datum from a different provision; this is a finish-height rule.

What sits behind the tile

A nonabsorbent finish is only as good as its base. If you are tiling, IRC R702.4 sets the backer.

Use a backer listed in Table R702.4.2. Its standards are ASTM C1178, C1278, C1288 or ISO 8336 Category C, and C1325, depending on the material. The table does not list C1396 as a shower tile backer standard. Follow the exact board maker’s instructions and its wet-area limits.

A finish rule is not a complete waterproofing design. These two sections alone do not settle the membrane detail. Other code provisions, the listed assembly and the maker’s instructions also matter. Check the shower base, liner, drain, seams and wall junctions as one system.

What the code doesn’t set

The IRC does not give you a full waterproofing spec. Know these two gaps before you assume more cover than the code gives.

  • No basin or vanity splash height. R307.2 covers bathtub and shower floors and walls only. There is no IRC number for the wall behind a basin or vanity.
  • No membrane spec. R307.2 and R702.4 do not by themselves give a complete membrane design. Do not infer that a shower needs no waterproof layer.

On site — what to check

  1. Measure up 72 in (1829 mm). Use the floor reference stated by R307.2. Confirm the datum on the approved assembly drawing. The nonabsorbent finish must reach that line.
  2. Check the backer before you tile. Use a product listed in Table R702.4.2. Check its standard and follow the wet-area installation instructions.
  3. Check local amendments. Some places extend the 72 in height. Some require a specific membrane, or point straight at the TCNA Handbook. Ask your building department before you order materials.
  4. Basins and vanities sit outside R307.2. Follow trade practice, or the tile and membrane maker’s instructions, for splash protection there.

How high does a shower or tub wall have to be waterproofed?
