The requirement
The IRC doesn’t hand you a full waterproofing spec for a bathroom the way some other codes do. What it sets is narrower and more specific: a nonabsorbent surface, to a set height, wherever a tub or shower gets wet (IRC 2021, Section R307.2 “Bathtub and shower spaces”).

The 72-inch (1829 mm) height is measured up from the floor, or from the drain inlet in a shower without a curb. Below that line the code wants a surface — tile, solid surface, an integral fiberglass or acrylic tub-shower unit — that won’t absorb water the way bare drywall does.

What sits behind the tile
A nonabsorbent finish is only as good as what it’s fixed to. If you’re tiling, IRC R702.4 sets the backer:
- Cement, fiber-cement or glass-mat gypsum backer board — conforming to ASTM C1178, C1288 or C1396 — is the approved base for tile in a tub or shower area.
- Water-resistant gypsum backing board (“greenboard”) is not permitted anywhere it will see direct water exposure or continuous high humidity. That rules it out as the tile base inside the shower or tub enclosure itself, even though it’s fine as backing further from the water.
Neither R307.2 nor R702.4 spells out a behind-the-board membrane system — sheet or liquid-applied waterproofing under the tile is common trade practice, and increasingly expected by tile setters and warranty providers, but it’s driven by the TCNA Handbook and manufacturer instructions, not written into these IRC sections as a mandatory layer.
What the code doesn’t set
Two things worth knowing before you assume more coverage than the code gives:
- No basin or vanity splash height. R307.2 is scoped to bathtub and shower floors and walls only. There’s no IRC number for the wall behind a basin or vanity.
- No membrane spec. The code sets the finish and the backer; it doesn’t mandate a specific waterproofing membrane behind either one.
On site — what to check
- Measure up 72 in (1829 mm) from the shower floor or drain inlet, and from the bathtub floor wherever there’s an installed showerhead — that’s the line the nonabsorbent finish has to reach.
- Confirm the backer before you tile — cement, fiber-cement or glass-mat gypsum board (ASTM C1178/C1288/C1396), never plain or water-resistant gypsum board inside the wet zone.
- Check local amendments. Some jurisdictions extend the 72 in height, require a specific membrane, or reference the TCNA Handbook directly — ask your building department before you order materials.
- Basins and vanities aren’t covered by R307.2 — follow trade practice or the tile/membrane manufacturer’s instructions for splash protection there.

- Adoption caveat: The IRC is a model code. It has no force of law until a state or town adopts it, and adopted editions in force range from 2015 to 2024 depending on jurisdiction, often with local amendments. California, Wisconsin, New York City and Chicago run their own codes instead of the IRC. R307.2’s nonabsorbent-finish requirement and 72 in height have been stable across recent editions, but always confirm the locally adopted edition and amendments — and whether your jurisdiction has added a membrane or extent requirement on top — with your building department before you build.
